Be the first to see the sunrise in Gisborne

The City of Gisborne is the easternmost city in the North Island and a great place to visit by bus  It is the first place in the world to see the sun. Gisborne has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, fantastic beaches, good fishing, scenic reserves and a strong Maori history. Surfing is a popular activity with the beaches producing some of the best beach breaks in the country. Being slightly off the beaten tourist track, the Gisborne region has retained some excellent pockets of untouched bushland, natural reserves and national parks. These areas of scenic beauty are perfect for kayaking, white water rafting, trout fishing, horse riding, hunting and bushwalking adventures.  Hire a bus in Gisborne to enjoy all this region has to offer.

The Maori people of Gisborne have allowed access to historical sites and viewings of some of the largest and most intricate meeting houses in New Zealand. The Eastland region is also a magnet for artists whose works reflect the seaside lifestyle and Maori influence in the form of paintings, sculptures and poetry. Gisborne attractions and activities include visits to wineries, diving for lobster and Paua, swimming with mako sharks and relaxing in natural bushland hot pools. The Morere Hot Springs is among the most beautiful hot pool complexes in the country. Surrounded by natural forests and meandering trails, the hot springs also offer a cold water pool and picnic area.

Take a trip to the Gisborne wine centre to sample the finest of East Coast wines while you relax in the sun or visit a variety of vineyards on a wine trail by bus. Gisborne is the first place Captain Cook set foot upon reaching New Zealand’s shores and you can get your photo taken beside the life-sized statue of the man himself. Charter boats specialise in fishing and diving trips off East Cape with catches including Snapper, Groper, Marlin, Tuna, Terakihi and Bluenose. If you’re keen to fish from land, drop a line off Tolaga Bay Wharf, the longest wharf in New Zealand spanning 660 metres in length. You’re sure to get a fish somewhere along this impressive structure, just ask a friendly local for some advice.

Whether you enjoy the Hawkes Bay beaches, fine wine, outdoor activities and attractions or a mixture of all three, you’ll find it all in Gisborne.
