The region of Hawkes Bay is blessed with a temperate climate, delicious fresh produce and award-winning wineries. There is always something happening here with a huge selection of events, concerts and festivals held annually. The main areas that make up the Hawkes Bay are Napier, Hastings, Havelock North, the northern beaches of Wairoa and Mahia and Lake Waikaremoana in the Te Urewera National Park. Hire a bus in Napier or Hastings to enjoy it that it offers.
Hawkes Bay attractions and activities take advantage of the region’s natural beauty and include cycle tours, hot air ballooning, white water rafting and kayaking. A must-do while you are in the Hawkes Bay is a visit out to the Gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers. The art deco City of Napier has an interesting collection of historical buildings to explore. The architecture has evolved from a destructive earthquake that required the entire City to be reconstructed in 1931 and visiting this reconnaissance provides an interesting insight into the Hawke’s Bay’s history.
Along with an excellent dining and entertainment scene in the cities and towns, there are over 70 Hawkes Bay wineries for food and wine lovers to visit by bus. Trendy eateries combine with vineyard restaurants, waterfront alfresco dining and historical pubs to offer a variety of dining styles to suit all budgets.
A visit to the Hawkes Bay would not be complete without a visit to the Farmer’s Market, held in Hastings every Sunday morning. The markets are the oldest in New Zealand and feature local produce, artists and musicians in a festive atmosphere. After all the food and wine you can walk it all off on one of the many tracks in the Te Urewera National Park. The Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk is among the top 10 best walks in the country so if you have 3 or 4 days to spare and a good set of hiking boots you will be rewarded with some magnificent scenery. Huts and camping areas provide accommodation along the way. Those with less time and less experience will enjoy the one-hour wheelchair-friendly trail. Boating and fishing are popular attractions and activities in and around the lake.
