What to do in and around Central Auckland

Auckland Inner City where the central business district is, is a hive of activity.  There are plenty of parks (albert park being the biggest), eating areas, quirky little side alleys and interesting people.  The waterfront which is the home of the former America’s Cup Village is now home to a number of tech companies.  The waterfront is great on a sunny day, allowing you to get away from the crowds and stroll around the various wharfs.

The inner city is home to Auckland University and therefore has a thriving student population.  Skycity is a big attraction in the inner city with the skyjump and it’s casino.  Parking is expensive and difficult so if you have a group, hiring a bus to take you into the city is a cost effective method.

Mount Eden and Epsom are beautiful leafy, green hillside suburbs.  They are old suburbs that are filled with villas and mansions.  There are plenty of trendy little shops and cafes dotted throughout the suburbs.  They are close to Cornwall Park, One Tree Hill and the inner city.   Take a bus up One Tree Hill to see the view across Auckland.

Ponsonby and Herne Bay is where the best restaurants, bars, and cafes are.  If you want to see the rich and famous in NZ then this is where you should hang out.  These suburbs are just outside the inner city and have all sorts of speciality shops that cater for the different needs.

Parnell and Newmarket are the trendy, and sophisticated suburbs of Auckland. The Parnell Village is charming, with lots of high class shops and restaurants. While there visit the Auckland Museum, and the extensive Auckland Domain with the war museum.  A little further out is Remuera which is Auckland’s most affluent suburb.  Travel through Remuera to visit the seaside suburbs of Mission Bay and St.Heliers.  These suburbs have a beautiful waterfront, where you can enjoy the beaches, boardwalks and cafes.

Greenlane which is just south is home to the ASB showgrounds and Alexandra race course.  A bus is ideal transportation to any events freeing you up for needing to worry about parking and dropping you off and picking you up from the gate.  Visit west Auckland to see the various activities across that part of the city.

A place to go if you want to go a bit further away is Hobbiton.
